Jareth, the Goblin King
Labyrinth

Jareth When Sarah wishes her annoying baby brother away, Jareth, the good-looking, witty, intelligent, sexy, all- powerful King of the Goblins (who, by the way, can turn into an owl at a moment's notice) takes the child to his castle beyond the Labyrinth and the goblin city, then challenges Sarah to solve the labyrinth in thirteen hours, if she succeeds she will get her brother back, but if she fails Jareth will turn Toby into a goblin, as Sarah had asked him to, in a sincere, almost businesslike deal, and then he cheats, advancing the clock by several hours.

To keep her from achieving her goal, Jareth throws numerous obstacles in Sarah's way and Jareth is as cunning, smart and downright dangerous an adversary as Sarah could have. And to reinforce the point, Jareth almost kills her by putting her on the wrong side of a hideously spiked cleaning machine and then sets her against her gnome friend by making him into a spy. He tries everything in and out of the book to discourage Sarah from continuing in her quest. And then he tries another tack.

From the beginning, Jareth attempts to convince Sarah to return home which, in any circumstances, is the last thing she wants. However, in the dreamy "masked ball" sequence, brought on by Sarah's eating of a drugged peach, Jareth plays on Sarah's attraction to him and to his land of her dreams. He will try to win this game of his by trapping her in her own fantasies. But he does not succeed, Sarah rejects his "ideal" world. Finally, she solves the labyrinth and in his castle with Escher-like stairs Jareth attempts to play with Sarah's mind further. He tries to entice her into remaining with him in his magical kingdom, offering her a life with him in his wondrous kingdom. She would live out her wildest dreams and, more importantly, escape from the life she hates.

Jareth: Sarah, beware. I have been generous up until now, but I can be cruel.
Sarah: Generous! What have you done that's generous?
Jareth: Everything! Everything that you wanted I have done. You asked that the child be taken. I took him. You cowered before me. I was frightening. I have reordered time. I have turned the world upside-down, and I have done it all for you! I am exhaused from living up to your expectations of me. Isn't that generous?
Sarah: Through dangers untold and hardships unnumbered, I have fought my way here to the castle beyond the goblin city, for my will is as strong as yours. And my--
Jareth: Stop! Wait! Look, sarah. Look what i'm offering you -- your dreams.
Sarah: ...and my kingdom is great.
Jareth: I ask for so little. Just let me rule you, and you can have everything that you want.
Sarah: Kingdom is great... Damn! I can never remember that line.
Jareth: Just fear me, love me, do as I say, and I will be your slave.
Sarah: My kingdom is great... My kingdom is great. You have no power over me!
