Lucien Lacroix is one of the main characters of the show Forever Knight. A venerable old vampire, his modern-
night cover is that of a latenight DJ named The Nightcrawler. He lives in Toronto and, in the third season of
the show, owns a nightclub called The Raven (see Janette DuCharme). In his mortal life he was a high-ranking
Roman general and the governer of Pompeii. He has two vampiric children featured prominently on the show:
a daughter named Janette and a whiny son named Nicholas who is a Toronto homicide cop.
LaCroix is perfectly happy with his vampiric nature, and
wishes that his favorite protege, Nicholas, would quit whining
and start enjoying the advantages of undeadness. He often acts in
cold-hearted, evil ways and gets a power rush out of it.
Cat-and-Mouse is a fun game for him, and he doesn't have a high
opinion of most mortals. When he doesn't have an emotional
attachment to his prey (he would try to claim that this is all
the time), he is a seductive and deliberate killer, and many of
his fans wish that his interest proved to be just a little less
fatal. All these things say he is a Bad'Un.
Occasionally, though, we see a different side. He really does
care about his children, and he has standards of conduct and a
sense of honor, though they may seem a bit obscure to us. He has
put himself at personal risk for Nick, even against the big bad
Enforcers; he will, of course, deny this vehemently, because he's
bad, right? The thought that he might have some good qualities
embarrasses him acutely. He has a soft spot for innocents, which
he usually manages to hide, even from himself; he does,
however, admit he has loved a mortal named Fleur (Nicholas's
mortal sister), but would not "ruin" her by bringing
her to the dark side. LaCroix is one of those Uns who refuses to
fit nicely into good or bad.
